The break-even
The America the Beautiful pass costs $80/year and covers entry to every federal fee area (all national parks, plus wildlife refuges, forests, BLM land). At $30–35 per park per vehicle, the pass pays for itself on the third park — and a national park road trip (Utah's Mighty Five alone: $150 in fees) makes it obvious.
What it covers and not
It covers entrance fees for the passholder and car occupants — not camping, not tours, not the shuttle systems (Zion), and not special permits (Angels Landing lottery, Half Dome). Senior ($80 lifetime), military (free), and 4th-grade (free) versions exist — check eligibility before paying.
The reservation era
Passes no longer guarantee entry: Glacier, Rocky Mountain, Arches, and others run timed-entry systems needing separate reservations. The pass is step one; the park's own reservation page (and recreation.gov) is step two. The planning rule: book the pass once, book the reservations per park, and book them months ahead.
